How to Measure for Kitchen Appliances

Correct measurements include much more than cabinet width. Use this room-to-truck checklist before buying a refrigerator, range, wall oven or dishwasher.

Appliance fit problems usually come from one of four places: the product opening, required operating clearances, utility locations or the delivery path. Measuring only the visible cabinet width can miss all four.

Start with the manufacturer installation sheet

Use the exact model number to find the manufacturer’s specification and installation documents. Product dimensions and required cutout dimensions are not always the same. Installation sheets may also specify ventilation space, anti-tip hardware, door clearances, electrical requirements, gas supply location, water pressure, drain height or cabinet support.

Measure the opening in multiple places

Measure width at the top, middle and bottom. Measure height at the left, center and right. Measure depth from the front face of the surrounding cabinet to the back wall, not just to the backsplash. Use the smallest measurement when evaluating basic fit.

Check whether floors, walls and cabinets are level and square. Older homes and remodeled kitchens can have openings that narrow toward the back or lean enough to affect door alignment.

Refrigerator measurements

  • Cabinet opening width, height and depth.
  • Distance to the opposite island or wall with refrigerator doors open.
  • Hinge-side wall clearance.
  • Water shutoff and outlet location.
  • Top, side and rear ventilation clearances.
  • Handle depth and door swing.
  • Space needed to remove bins and shelves.

Counter-depth, built-in and panel-ready are different configurations. A panel-ready refrigerator may require custom panels, handle hardware and exact reveal dimensions that are not included with the appliance.

Ranges, cooktops and wall ovens

For a range, verify width, depth, countertop height, anti-tip requirements, gas/electrical supply and ventilation. Check whether the range is freestanding, slide-in or professional-style because side gaps, backguards and countertop overlap differ.

For cooktops, measure the cutout and the cabinet beneath it. Drawer boxes, supports, gas regulators and junction boxes can conflict with the appliance. For wall ovens, measure the cutout width, height and depth and confirm cabinet support capacity, electrical location and door clearance.

Dishwasher and laundry measurements

For dishwashers, verify opening width, floor-to-counter height, depth, drain routing, water shutoff and electrical connection. Flooring installed in front of the opening can trap an old dishwasher or reduce usable height.

For washers and dryers, include hoses, vent duct, gas connection, power cord and door clearance. A 30-inch-deep machine may need significantly more room after connections and door movement are considered. For stacked units, verify ceiling height and stacking-kit compatibility.

Measure the complete delivery path

  1. Parking or loading area to building entrance.
  2. Gate, exterior door and security door openings.
  3. Lobby turns, elevators and approved delivery times.
  4. Hallways, stair width, landings and ceiling height.
  5. Interior doors, islands, railings and tight turns.
  6. The final opening and room maneuvering space.

Record the narrowest width and lowest height. Removeable doors or handles may help, but do not assume they can be removed safely without confirming the model.

Practical tip: take photos with the tape measure visible. Send the opening, utilities, path constraints and building rules before delivery is scheduled.

What to include on the order

Document who is responsible for measuring, any assumptions about fit, door or handle removal, stairs or elevator work, floor protection, installation parts, cabinetry modifications and what happens if the appliance cannot be delivered to the final location.
